Marfa and West Texas (at a glance)

11/25/12: After grabbing a quick breakfast from the "24 Diner" in Austin, we hit the road in the early morning to head to Marfa, Tx for the night (a small artist colony in West Texas). All along the 8 hour trip, our breath was taken away by the endless views of scrub brush, cacti, and yes, wind generators!

Later that afternoon, we arrived in Marfa at around 3:00pm and checked into our accomodations at El Cosmico (a camp site which provides renovated trailers from the 70's, teepees, and safari tents). We chose the safari tent! Although the evenings plunged down to the 30's, we kept warm with our heated mattresses!

After a long run around the "downtown" (full of art galleries and a few restaurants) we took the time to explore the campgrounds and Kathryn took a much needed rest in a nearby hammock.

That evening, our night was full of dog-barking, car rumblings, and nearby trains--needless to say, it wasn't the best night sleep. Despite the exhaustion, we were off the next morning to New Mexico (Santa Fe).

11/26/12: Based on a great recommendation from the owners of Pizza Foundation in Marfa (where we ate the night before--gluten free pizza of course) we headed west on route 17 toward Balmorhea State park (at the foothills of the Davis Mountains). The views were stunning!!!

Expansive prairie views contrasted by mountains in the distance continued for some time and then gradually became less striking as we headed out of the Balmorhea area. However, we had our sights set on New Mexico which was just around the corner ( 4 hours or so)!!

AUSTIN Texas

11/21/12 We arrived to the city of Austin after a long drive from New Orleans, where we were promptly greeted by my dear friend Sara!!! We settled into her apartment, chatted and caught up while sitting on her roof deck overlooking Austin.
We then proceeded to an unbelievable meal of sushi at "Kenichi" and ended the night with live music. 11/22/12 We awoke on thanksgiving morning and we started the day with a beautiful run around the river in Austin, the trail was packed with people getting their exercise in before a big thanksgiving meal. Afterwards, we headed to the Rodell's house to help Sara and her family finish cooking thanksgiving dinner. All turned out great and it was a delicious thanksgiving meal with our surrogate Texas family.
After we filled ourselves with turkey and all the yummy sides, we headed into Austin to tailgate at the UT vs. TCU game. Hook 'em horns!
The University of Texas (Austin) stadium holds about 110,000 people! Those Texans do not mess around when it comes to football! It was amazing to see all the devoted fans and their pre-game set-ups!
11/23/12 Friday after thanksgiving Sara took Alex and I on an awesome tour of Austin, we started the day with a much needed yoga class at "Black Swan Yoga" and then rented mountain bikes and biked the greenbelt trail around Austin....very cool and we stopped for a Texas lunch at "Tacodeli", which was yummy!
We continued our day with a walk around Austin before heading back to the Rodell's for party time!
Such a great time with the Rodell's, a big thanks to them for having us over the holiday weekend! We loved Austin and that certainly had much to do with our wonderful hosts!

11/24/12 Our last day in Austin we continued our bike tour of the city and strolled the streets of South Congress, meandered through funky stores (one with more cowboy/girl boots than we had ever seen in our lives!), and stopped for a coffee before enjoying our last lovely dinner with miss Sara and then listening to a great concert by "The Wood Brothers" at the Parish in downtown Austin.

A great way to end our fabulous and memorable visit to Austin! And we are off to Marfa Texas!

Last Day in New Orleans and we're off to Texas!

                                                                  Magazine Street
11/20/12 We started our morning off with a long run down Magazine street and into the Garden district, where we discovered a very cute area filled with coffee shops and various boutique stores.      As we looped back we ran along small streets that were lined with huge beautiful southern houses with massive wrap-around decks. It was a great way to start the day. We then headed to Bywater to grab some brunch at a little hipster spot "Satsuma".
On the streetcar heading back to the hotel for some R&R....Someone was tired after our day running, walking and exploring New Orleans.

After which we meandered back towards the french market, around the French Quarter and then took the streetcar to Audubon park.

We ended the day by meeting cousins, Virginia and Frances Currie (Scannell family from Arkansas), at "Jenny & Dick's" for a southern dinner, which was such a treat to meet and unite with family in New Orleans!!

New Orleans!!!

11/19/12 We drove about 8.5 hours from Nashville TN to get to New Orleans! And, of course, we split the driving.

We are excited to be here! We've already gotten a lot in within the first night of being here. We walked along the famous and crazy Bourbon Street and into a quieter area of the French Quarter where we met up with MICAH!!! for a drink at an old New Orleans bar.
SO SO great to see an old friend in a new city! Micah gave us tons of excellent recommendations and advice for seeing this cool city! After drinks we proceeded to Frenchman street (thanks Micah!) where we had a delicious New Orleans dinner while we listened to live music at the "Three Muses".

Blue Ridge Parkway/Asheville, NC

THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS! We took a hike in  the smoky mountains, which were beautiful and it was very interesting to see how different the woods, trails and mountains are in the south compared to the more rugged mountains we are used to in the Northeast. We very much enjoyed our stay in the lovely town of Asheville.
11/17/12: late-night checkers battle at the ice cream shop...
