11/25/12: After grabbing a quick breakfast from the "24 Diner" in Austin, we hit the road in the early morning to head to Marfa, Tx for the night (a small artist colony in West Texas). All along the 8 hour trip, our breath was taken away by the endless views of scrub brush, cacti, and yes, wind generators!
Later that afternoon, we arrived in Marfa at around 3:00pm and checked into our accomodations at El Cosmico (a camp site which provides renovated trailers from the 70's, teepees, and safari tents). We chose the safari tent! Although the evenings plunged down to the 30's, we kept warm with our heated mattresses!
After a long run around the "downtown" (full of art galleries and a few restaurants) we took the time to explore the campgrounds and Kathryn took a much needed rest in a nearby hammock.
That evening, our night was full of dog-barking, car rumblings, and nearby trains--needless to say, it wasn't the best night sleep. Despite the exhaustion, we were off the next morning to New Mexico (Santa Fe).
11/26/12: Based on a great recommendation from the owners of Pizza Foundation in Marfa (where we ate the night before--gluten free pizza of course) we headed west on route 17 toward Balmorhea State park (at the foothills of the Davis Mountains). The views were stunning!!!
Expansive prairie views contrasted by mountains in the distance continued for some time and then gradually became less striking as we headed out of the Balmorhea area. However, we had our sights set on New Mexico which was just around the corner ( 4 hours or so)!!
